DCHC Safety Committee Honored with 2025 Spotlight Safety Award

On April 16, 2025, the Davis County Hospital & Clinics (DCHC) Safety Committee received the Spotlight Safety Award from Assured Partners and the Iowa Hospital Association (IHA) ServiShare during a ceremony held in Des Moines. This distinguished award recognizes the committee’s exceptional achievements in improving workplace and patient safety at DCHC.

Over the past several years, the Safety Committee has demonstrated unwavering dedication to fostering a strong culture of safety. Through comprehensive risk analysis, mitigation strategies, training, education, and policy development, the committee has made significant strides in creating a safer environment for both staff and patients.

As part of its revitalization efforts, the committee restructured its operations to better prioritize emerging needs and ensure member accountability. This renewed focus has led to a series of impactful safety improvements across the organization.

Key initiatives include:

  • Implementation of a hospital-wide drill schedule

  • Expansion of panic alarm locations

  • Development of standard operating procedures

  • Launch of targeted safety awareness campaigns

  • Enhancements to lighting and signage

  • Revised policies addressing behavioral health and security protocols

These efforts have significantly advanced DCHC's preparedness and responsiveness, contributing to a safer, more efficient care environment.

The success of these initiatives can be attributed to the dedication of several key leaders:

  • Nikki Thordarson, Chief Nursing Officer, led the charge in policy revisions and staff safety training.

  • Cassie Northup, Clinic Director, ensured clinic operations remained closely aligned with the hospital’s safety strategy.

  • Christopher Hickie, Information Technology Director, strengthened emergency preparedness through improved panic alarm systems and reliable communication technology.

  • Amy Marlow, Director of Quality, Risk, and Safety, coordinated risk analysis efforts and oversaw the implementation of effective safety protocols.

Thanks to their leadership and the collaborative efforts of the entire committee, DCHC has made measurable progress in ensuring a safer healthcare environment. This recognition serves as a testament to the team’s dedication to continuous improvement, effective communication, and a patient-first mindset.

We are proud to celebrate this well-earned recognition and remain committed to delivering safe, high-quality care to the communities we serve.
